What To Expect Before, During, And After An Eye Exam

Regular eye exams are an integral part of your overall eye health. If you are getting ready to visit to eye doctor serving San Jose, use the following guide to figure out what you can expect from the process: What to Expect Before, During, and After an Eye Exam

Before Your Exam

When you call to schedule your next eye exam, the receptionist at the eye doctor will most likely ask you about your health insurance and whether or not you have eye coverage. You should also use this time to talk about any vision issues you might be experiencing or if you are just coming in for a routine exam. You should give the doctor a list of the medications you are taking and information about your family's eye health history. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you should bring them with you to your exam.

During the Exam

The purpose of the exam is to check on the current condition of your eyes and to measure your vision to see if you need corrective lenses. During a regular exam, you can expect to take an eye muscle movement test that makes sure your eyes are in alignment. You will also need to take a cover test to see if your eyes work well together or if one tends to compensate for the other. The eye doctor will also test your pupillary reactions, your visual acuity, and your retinoscopy. If you need glasses, the eye doctor will do a refraction test. Most eye exams also include a slit lamp to test for certain diseases, a retinal exam to test the back of your eyes, and a glaucoma test to make sure you do not have this condition.

After the Exam

Once the exam is complete, your pupils might be slightly dilated from the tests. If you wear contact lenses, the doctor or his or her assistant can fit you with a new pair and give you the chance to buy more. You can also try on different pairs of glasses and order new ones if your prescription has changed.
